Culinary schools, or cooking schools, are a specialized type of educational facilities. This is where people go to learn about the art and science of food preparation. People who complete these programs can earn certification and degrees that prove they have been trained in the field.

Most of these schools are closely tied to restaurants. That is, they work closely with restaurants to allow students the opportunity to experience this real-life environment. This gives individuals an opportunity to try out the different roles in the industry. Culinary schooling also provides resources and courses related to starting up restaurants, creating products, releasing cookbooks and other potential ventures available to chefs.

Marthe Distel founded the culinary arts school known as Le Cordon Bleu in Paris during the 1890s. In the early part of the 1900s, Fannie Farmer opened a school of cookery in Boston. Her school was not the first of its kind, as Farmer had once served as the principal of a Boston Cooking School that was founded in 1879 by the Womens Education Association, WEA.

What is taught in these schools will range. Some programs give chefs the opportunity to showcase their skills and knowledge in order to get certified. Others teach students and award them with associates or bachelors degrees when they have completed the program. There are even some places that give both degrees and certification to all students who graduate the programs.

Those interested in attending these educational facilities are often passionate for cooking and enjoy food. Some may have a particularly interest in a certain type of cuisine and get training that reflects that. Furthermore, some may be more interest in a different meal type, such as desserts. Still, there are some places that offer short courses and classes to the general public where they can learn cooking basics. These are geared toward those who do not want to earn certification or a degree but want to feel more comfortable in the kitchen environment.

Culinary schools are in operation all around the world. These educational facilities are designed to teach aspiring chefs how to properly prepare and cook food. The curriculum in these programs will range based on many different factors. Individuals who want to work in this industry should get this type of schooling so that they can receive training, certification and a degree. The cost for this kind of schooling will differ but financial assistance is available through many different sources.
