Why You Should Sell Wine

By Kathy Kaufman

If you want to sell wine, you will find that there is plenty of opportunity to do so. There are many types of wines available and you can specialize in something, or you can decide to go the general route. Of course, this type of knowledge does not build up overnight, and there are lots of ways that you can learn about this.

Of course, if you are just selling inexpensive wine at a supermarket, then all of this is not as important. You can't be expected to know about every single product on the shelves. You need to know about the prices and where they come from, but you probably don't need to know much more than that. You may find an interest for wine right here, and move onto the next level.

Of course, cultures are very different. People in Tuscany and France grow up knowing a lot about wines and grapes, especially those in the country. Those that live on farms will almost be experts. Compared to people in North America and the United Kingdom, they won't need to go anywhere to learn about this subject.

They may want something with a fruity taste or something sweet. You can't just point them in the direction where they should go. You have to be a little more helpful than that. It is important to guide them, because they may not know anything about wines, and this is where you come in. You can't trick them, like a lot of people do.

For local people, they would not usually buy the best of the best, but they will still want good wine. You would have to tell them about any new products that have come in. In a case like this, often wineries also sell other things, like olive oil and balsamic vinegar, so you also have to know a little about these things.

It is only when you understand the differences of what is fruity and what is sweet that you can start to sell and advise others what to buy. Someone might come into the shop and ask what best goes with a particular dessert. You must be able to pair this up with different foods. You should also be able to recommend something based on tastes.

You can end up at a place like Tuscany or in the countryside in France, where you will be entertaining people, who will mostly be tourists. This is where you can learn about wines from this part of the region, before going somewhere else like California or Australia. In a place, like South Africa, they need people to give wine tours.

Someone who has a passion for this fine substance will enjoy being able to sell wine absolutely anywhere. You could even immigrate to Italy or France and find yourself a job there amongst the vineyards. This is what a lot of people are doing these days. On the other hand, many people like to stay where they are. They are quite happy with that.
