How to Grow Herbs in a Vertical Planter

By Joanna Seibert

Fresh herbs can make a world of difference in cooking, but they can get expensive to buy at the grocery store regularly. One way you can get fresh herbs without wasting lots of cash is to make your own herb garden. You can have fresh natural herbs on hand when you want them, and you simply clip off the amount you want without having a leftover bunch that gets wasted.

Even if you do not consider yourself a green thumb gardener, you can still grow natural herbs in your kitchen without a great deal of work. In fact, lots of common herbs are low-cost to buy, so you don't have to start them from seed.

Finding a Location for Your Natural Herb Planter

Nevertheless, it can be challenging to find a convenient location to grow your herbs. You also need sunshine for your spices to grow well. The ideal place to put your container is in a sunny location and near your cooking area. This can be inside or outside, depending on your environment and light available.

Ideally, you don't want your herb planter to be in the way of other activities or use up useful counter space. Not everyone has an optional window sill alongside their kitchen sink, and additional counter space might not be an option.

The Reason Vertical Containers are Great for Herbs

This is where a vertical spice garden comes in convenient. Rather than putting it on a table, counter or floor, an upright container can be placed out of the way on a wall. In addition, a higher place tends to receive more sunshine, which will help your plants grow better and stay healthy.

Vertical planting containers can also be remarkably compact. This means that you can plant more herbs and be able to use a greater number of spices without using up an entire wall.

Herbs are a perfect option for vertical gardens since most plants stay small and require very little dirt. You don't have to have a big container, plus the planter will not get super heavy.

Container Kits You Can Buy

You can purchase inexpensive vertical garden kits that let you plant and hang your garden immediately without a lot of hassle. Lots of kits come with areas that can be removed or can be quickly refilled with different plants. For herbs that are annuals, this will make your yearly herb planting job simple and quick.

Building Your Own Vertical Garden

Alternatively, if you are handy or imaginative, you can make your own upright planter that meets your particular requirements for size and shape. Some planters are built from recycled containers like shipping pallets. Others can be made from easy supplies like rain gutters from your neighborhood home improvement store.

Herbs to Grow

You can start your plants from seed, however, lots of people find that buying young plants at the local garden center is much simpler and less hassle. Some varieties that grow well in upright planters are parsley, cilantro, thyme, oregano, chives, stevia, marjoram, sage and tarragon. Rosemary and lavender have the tendency to get to big for a little container, but that doesn't mean that you can't attempt.
